Through practical workshops and a supportive environment this program addresses the need for greater confidence and independence among women in managing everyday maintenance. Workshop Details

While woodworking classes exist in most communities, few cater specifically to women. Many women express interest in woodworking but are intimidated by traditional, male-dominated shop environments.

Our program addresses that gap by offering inclusive, supportive, and empowering learning spaces.

The Women’s DIY Workshop group is a community-based program designed to empower women by teaching them essential do-it-yourself (DIY) skills. Through practical workshops and a supportive environment this program addresses the need for greater confidence and independence among women in managing everyday maintenance. The group aims to teach DIY skills and techniques and networks of capable, confident women with our community.

 

Many women express the lack of confidence in tackling DIY Projects, often due to limited knowledge, tools, hand tools, hands-on-training. This program seeks to change this by offering a safe, practical space with education and lots of encouragement, ensuring women feel capable and empowered to complete the tasks. This will benefit the participants, their families and the community.

 

Goals:

  • Build confidence in using tools among women
  • Learn practical skills in home maintenance
  • Encourage independence and problem solving
  • Develop basic car maintenance knowledge

Target audience:

Women of all ages, backgrounds, cultures, and anyone that identifies as a female.
No prior DIY or any other skills needed.

 

Program structure:

01:00-02:00pm – Introduction to course and basic tools
02:00-02:30pm – Start rebate box
02:30-02:45pm – Afternoon tea
02:45-03:30pm – Small gyprock repairs
03:30-04:00pm – Hang shelf
04:00-04:30pm – Refreshment break (light meal included)
04:30-05:00pm – Smoke alarms and safety planning
05:00-05:30pm – Car oil, coolant, jump start
05:30-06:00pm – Finish rebate box
06:00pm – Workshop ends

 

*Minimum class sizes: Woodchix reserves the right to cancel classes if minimum numbers are not met. Participants will be notified and offered alternative dates to attend.
